Even though the are one of the more recently created characters, the Death Knights are an extremely powerful class. These once dead characters had been under control by the evil Lich King; they are now on a quest to end his terror. They use the demonic power he has given them. Once members of his legion, they now use his own powers against him to stop the devastation of Azeroth. They are given the power to use plated gear, and are so powerful, that you must first have a character at level 55 before you can even have access to the Death Knight. All types of characters can become a Death Knight.

They are able to wear plated gear, which will give them the most defense, and can also use every weapon in the game, except for bows and guns. They have a small amount of ranged attacks, but the fact that they have both melee and ranged is a huge asset.

Priests and Paladins use mana, while Warriors use rage, Hunters have focus as their energy source, but Death Knights have their own specific power system, Runes. If used properly this Rune system can create a ton of power, given the illusion that your Death Knight will have an endless amount of power.

Another perk is having access to Ebony Hold when ever you want. This is the Death Knight's (DK's) home. At Ebony Hold they posses the power to forge their weapons to bolster specific aspects of their stats. The DKs are the only ones can have these upgrades.

With so much power and armor, the Death Knight can be used as either a DPS or a tanking character. The mass of damage you do will be from your spells doing damage over a period of time. This is because of your most important aspect as a Death Knight, your diseases. These diseases can assist you in destroying one target, or if you choose you can infect a large group of targets. The best part of your diseases is the power to refresh your diseases over and over again until you have defeated your opponent. This gives them the advantage against one or many targets.

No one has the Rune system that a Death Knight has. Because there are 2 of each Rune (blood, frost and unholy) and each of your spells have specific Runes they consume, you must be precise in your rotation of spells. Your rotation of spells is so crucial, because if you don't have a good one you will be hindered by what you are able to use.

If you have the right talent, you can turn any used rune into a death rune. The next time you consume that rune, it can count as any of the other 3 rune types (blood, frost or unholy). The death rune is what gives the DK the power to get stronger over long periods of time.

Blood, Frost and Unholy are your three choices as your spec to use your talents in. Understand that the decision you make will determine your rotation and the attacks you use. If you want to become a tank, you will want to pick the blood spec. This will give you a great deal of self healing as you attack and the ability to hold your enemies attention easier.

When it comes to DPS you have two choices: Frost and Unholy. There is some debate over which is the highest overall damage. Frost is a spec that can handle both one handed and two handed weapons, while Unholy makes your attacks quicker and is best with two handed weapons. Frost gives you more power while Unholy gives you more speed. When you crunch the damage numbers, I have found that overall Unholy is the better of the 2 because of the importance Unholy puts on the diseases, but the difference is so small that you could easily go both ways.

If you are looking to level your DK, I suggest you to use your talent points in the Blood spec. Using your self healing powers gives you a big advantage over the enemies you will be fighting. This is the fastest way for you to level your character. These health buffs will give you an added advantage over any enemy, because you will be so difficult to destroy.

Once you have reached your max level, you may then change specs to either of the other 2, or stay in Blood. When ever you so desire you can change talent trees by going back to Ebony Hold.

Many people enjoy playing as a Death Knight because of how powerful they are. Being such a popular character to play, you will find many opinions on the best way to play a DK, make sure you do plenty of research from respectable websites. Even though you have the ability to become a tank or a DPS character, the best point of a DK is their damage so DPS will be your best spec.
